NO CUTS - NO REPATRIATION FIGHT BACK ACROSS LONDON
The Labour Group on Camden Council is carrying out Tory attacks on the borough! Council services are to be slashed by 2040% and 1800 jobs are to go. How does the Labour Group think it is going to fight Tory legislation, such as privatisation, poll tax, schools opting out of ILEA and cuts in the Health Service, if it is carrying out the Tories’ dirty work now? Who will be left to fight?
Labour Councillors supporting cuts lied to the electors when they stood ona Manifesto stating that they would never carry out Tory cuts even if it meant conflict with the government. They lied when they promised consultation over major changes. They lied when they promised to defend front-line services and the oppressed, when cuts were introduced. Labour Briefing warned that all cuts were anti-working class, racist and sexist. The inescapable logic of the cults now means repatriation for Irish families to reduce the homelessness bill. And worse is to come as the cuts bite.
The eleven Councillors in the Manifesto Group have stood by the working class by opposing all cuts, by calling fora budget based on social need, and for
Camden to fight back against the government. 100 Councillors across London are now taking the same stance.
Industrial action from local government workers is needed to beat back the Tory offensive and the cuts from Labour Councils. The action has to be London-wide for results to be obtained, as each borough fighting on its own will lose through isolation and demoralisation. The one-day strike and demonstration across London on Wednesday 9th March 1988 planned by London Bridge and London Fightback should therefore be supported by everybody.
We also need to win active support from our allies in the community: tenants, parents, voluntary organisations and other unions. The Council is trying to pit the community against the workforce, despite the unity of interest that exists. We must not allow them to do this. It is our job to build the widest unity against the cuts.
We must build a mass campaign across London. A campaign that will bring together all of those who want to defend jobs and services and fight the Thatcher Government. Today is only the beginning.
